Magdiel García Almanza (Cuban, b. Camagüey 1971) is a sculptor born and raised in Camagüey, where he studied Fine Arts and developed an early commitment to artistic practice. Working from his studio in a restored 17th-century home in the historic Plaza de San Juan de Dios, he creates distinctive sculptures from reclaimed tropical hardwoods—often mahogany salvaged from colonial-era buildings, some over 200 years old. These materials imbue his work with a strong sense of history, place, and transformation.

García Almanza’s practice centers on the human figure, which he deconstructs into geometric components and reassembles into dynamic, abstract forms. Influenced by modernist traditions and artists such as Wifredo Lam and Carlos Mérida, as well as the legacy of Spanish Cubism, his work bridges heritage and contemporary abstraction. Many sculptures incorporate movable elements, inviting tactile engagement and shifting perceptions, so that each piece reveals multiple identities depending on the viewer’s perspective.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections across the United States, Europe, and Latin America. He is the recipient of the Fidelio Ponce de León Distinction, and his practice continues to resonate for its fusion of material history, craftsmanship, and interactive form.
